12 Songs I Never Get Sick Of
12. In My Life – The Beatles
“Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more.”
No other song makes me feel both a little forlornness with happiness, simultaneously, every single time I listen to it (which is a lot). Granted, I’ve exhausted all my Mom’s Beatle’s cd’s through the years, and I’ll never tire of the greatest band of all time.
11. Beast of Burden – Rolling Stones
“Am I hard enough? Am I rough enough? Am I rich enough?”
No song turns me on more than the Rolling Stones, Beast of Burden. Enough said.
10. Mistletoe – Jukebox The Ghost
“I believe in the end out of love truth grows,
And if I’m to be alone, then I’ll be alone,
But don’t look at me like another lost soul.”
I first saw Jukebox The Ghost open for my favorite band, Guster, and I immediately loved them and bought their album. Their lyrics and melodies are top notch. Keep your eye out for this rising band from Brooklyn. They’re going to be huge.
9. Goshen – Beirut
“You’re on in five
It’s time you rise or fade.”
Beirut front man, Zach Condon, is a musical genius. I was first introduced to Beirut about three years by fellow comic and buddy, Tim Gage, and Beirut instantly became one of my favorite bands. Their music is beautiful and engaging. And I’ve probably listened to their album Riptide at least a thousand times.
8. Us – Regina Spektor
“We’re living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
We’re living in a den of thieves
And it’s contagious.”
Regina Spektor is one of the most unique musicians today. Her voice is bewitching, and her piano skills are amazing. I recommend the live version of this song. It’s magnificent. And it’s contagious.
7. Saint Simon – The Shins
“Mercy’s eyes are blue
When she places them in front of you
Nothing holds a roman candle to
The solemn warmth you feel inside”
James Mercer of The Shins is another musical and lyrical genius. The Shins are one of my favorite bands, and I love all their albums, and they have many songs I listen to over and over. It was hard to pick one. Every time I hear Saint Simon, I just want to pause what I’m doing and drink it in.
6. Jolene – The White Stripes
“Well you could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He’s the only one for me, Jolene.”
This is a Dolly Parton cover. My love for Jack White is no secret. The live version of this song from Under Great White Northern Lights is brilliant. I rock out in my car to this song.
5. Sweet Disposition – The Temper Trap
“A moment of love
A dream
A laugh
A kiss
A cry
Our rights
Our wrongs”
If this song doesn’t draw you in, I don’t thing we have anything in common.
4. Sally’s Song – Fiona Apple
“And will we ever end up together?
No, I think not, it’s never to become.
For I am not the one.”
Music by Danny Elfman, my favorite movie composer. You’ve heard his scores in Tim Burton Films, Marvel Films, and many others. He’s the best. This song is from a childhood favorite film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The song in the film is great, but Fiona Apple’s haunting voice makes this one of my all time favorite songs.
3. Two Points For Honesty – Guster
“If that’s all you will be, you’ll be a waste of time.
You’ve dreamed a thousand dreams,
none seem to stick in your mind.
Two points for honesty.
It must make you sad to know that
nobody cares at all.”
Guster is my favorite band. And I know every song on all their albums by heart. I’ve seen them in concert six or seven times, and was fortunate enough to meet them (great dudes!). I love so many of their songs, but Two Points for Honesty has resonated with me through the years, and different phases of my life.
2. Tom Traubert’s Blues – Tom Waits
“And it’s a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace,
And a wound that will never heal.”
I feel like I’m living in a Tom Wait’s song on a daily basis. He’s one of my favorites, and I would kill to see him live. His music is an acquired taste, but like most acquired tastes, once you’re hooked, you’ll crave it all the time. I used to to listen to this song every night before I went to bed. It’s so sad, and so beautiful… “I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.”
1. Missed the Boat – Modest Mouse
“Oh, and I know this of myself
I assume as much for other people
Oh, and I know this of myself
We’ve listened more to life’s end gong
Than the sound of life’s sweet bells.”
I fucking love this song. I love it. I wish this song was a person so I could marry it.
